With a population of about 250,000, Jefferson County has an economy driven by the petrochemical industry and is home to over 50 major industrial facilities. The man-made Sabine Neches waterway in the county is maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and is traversed by around 2,000 ships each year.
